Role
The Learning Support Committee functions as a liaison between faculty, students, and departments that provide learning support services. The Committee advises the deans and directors responsible for the library, academic support program, counseling workshops, and similar functions. The committee also makes policy recommendations to the Executive Council regarding these areas. Specific committee functions include but are not limited to:
- Approving student learning outcomes for learning support workshops, tutorials, and similar events.
- Reviewing learning support outcomes assessment results.
- Gathering input, from internal and external experts, on learning support programs’ educational equipment and materials, including the library collection.
- Soliciting stakeholder input into the development of library and academic support services and facilitating collaboration with instructional departments and community groups.
- Ensuring that students at all CMI locations have equitable and appropriate access to learning support.
- Developing stronger, provable connections between learning support outcomes and student learning outcomes for courses and instructional programs.
- Reviewing how the institution meets ACCJC Standard II.B for compliance and continuous improvement.
Scope
The Learning Support Committee reports to the Executive Council. The Associate Dean of Learning Support is the convening officer and chairperson. The Library Director is the vice chair.
The Secretariat shall prepare minutes of the meetings and ensure they are posted to the college website within two weeks of approval.
The voting membership of the Learning Support Committee shall consist of:
- Library Director
- Associate Dean of Learning Support
- Dean of WAVES
- One faculty representative from each instructional department
- Two SBA representatives
- Counseling Director
- Nuclear Institute Director
- Learning Designer
- IT Director
The Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs shall be a non-voting member. The committee will meet once per month during the academic year, on the second Thursday of every month at 11:10 a.m. The chairperson shall call special meetings of the committee whenever necessary. A simple majority of voting members shall constitute a quorum; any vacant positions shall not be counted towards the number of members required to meet quorum. All motions will pass with a simple majority of the members present or by electronic voting within two business days. The chairperson will only vote in case of a tie. The Learning Support Committee will assess its effectiveness annually. At the beginning of each academic year, the Learning Support Committee shall share its assessment and recommended remedial action. Library staff and Academic Support Program paraprofessionals shall attend meetings to provide staff support and information.
Authority
The Learning Support Committee is constituted in accordance with Section 620.01 of CMI’s General Administrative Policies.
