Math Level 3

MATH 030 - Math Level 3 (Pre-Algebra)

This course helps students build basic concepts and skills in probability and statistics through real life problems.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Utilize counting methods in problem solving. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)
  • Calculate probabilities involving compound events (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)

Math Level 2

MATH 020 - Math Level 2 (Pre-Algebra)

This course helps students build knowledge and skills in Pre-Algebra through practical applications involving ratio, proportion and percent, measurements, and basic concepts of geometry.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, student will able to:

  • Solve ratio and proportion problems. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)
  • Solve word problems involving percent using the four problem solving steps. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)
  • Convert units within and between the English and Metric systems of measurement. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)

Math Level 1

MATH 010 - Math Level 1 (Basic Mathematics)

The course contains high school equivalency basics that build essential test readiness skills in mathematics. It builds students basic skills on number sense and operation with whole numbers, integers, fractions and decimals.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and understand place value, fundamental operations, factoring, rounding and estimation. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts).
  • Perform basic operations involving integers. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)
  • Simplify numerical expressions involving rational numbers. (ABE Knowledge and meaning of mathematical concepts)

Writing Level 5

WRI 050 - Writing Level 5

Writing Level 5 enables students to learn about the different text types and purposes and how to use each one effectively. This course also prepares students to use the knowledge from the different levels of Writing in various forms of assessment necessary to complete the program.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experience or events using effective technique (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Organize ideas, concepts and information in informative and explanatory text (ABE Academic content of writing).
  • Develop claims and counterclaims fairly and completely (ABE Academic content of writing)

Writing Level 4

WRI 040 - Writing Level 4

The course will provide students with the skills of pre-writing, writing; revising and editing so that the task of writing will feel more manageable.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Write an essay including introduction, body and conclusion (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Produce coherent writing (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Develop writing by planning, revising and editing (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Focus on what is more significant for a specific purpose and audience (ABE Academic content of writing)

Writing Level 3

WRI 030 - Writing Level 3

The course will teach students how to combine ideas in sentences and learn about writing effective sentences and choosing the appropriate style and diction. Students will be taught the basics of paragraph structure including how to write effective topic sentences. It will also engage students in learning about tone and diction and order of importance, time, order, cause and effect order and comparison and contrast order.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Produce simple, compound and complex sentences (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Recognize tone and diction in paragraphs (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Organize paragraphs and short responses (ABE Academic content of writing)

  • Use the correct forms of English to communicate their intended meaning

Writing Level 2

WRI 020 - Writing Level 2

The course will provide students with the knowledge of how to distinguish between adjectives and adverbs with the practice on how to use these modifiers and how to with phrases as modifiers. Students will be taught the rules of capitalization and punctuation. The in class activities will engage them in knowing how to spell possessives, contractions, homophones, and affixes. The course also engages students in learning the basic spelling patterns and generalizations. The course prepares students to write clearly and demonstrate command of standard English conventions.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the functions of the adjectives and adverbs in sentences (ABE Academic content of writing)

Writing Level 1

WRI 010 - Writing Level 1

The course will provide students with the basic knowledge of the fundamentals of a sentence and the different types of verbs and subject verb agreement.

SLOs – Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the different types of sentences (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Recognize categories of nouns and apply correct usage (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Understand functions of pronouns and apply correct usage (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Know the various verb tenses and use them correctly (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Use subject verb agreement rules correctly in sentences (ABE Academic content of writing)
  • Use conventions of English consistently

Reading Level 5

REA 050 - Reading Level 5

The Reading Level 5 describes the elements of fiction texts – the plot, setting, characters, point of view, literal and figurative language, theme and text structure. Students will use the basic knowledge from levels 1 to 4 to complete Reading practice tests.

REA 040 - Reading Level 4

The course will provide students with practice reading sessions with non-fiction prose, biographies and autobiographies.
