All students at the College of the Marshall Islands are expected to demonstrate qualities of integrity, honesty, civility, and respect. These qualities are important to the learning environment and they are expected to be exhibited as part of the daily life of the entire CMI community, both in and out of the classroom setting. CMI recognizes the rights of its students as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, that include a student’s rights within the institution to freedom of speech, inquiry, assembly, peaceful pursuit of an education, and reasonable use of the services and facilities of the College.
In the interest of maintaining civility on campus and guaranteeing the broadest range of freedom, students must comply with the College of the Marshall Islands Student Code of Conduct, which reasonably limits some activities and prohibits certain behavior which could interfere with the classroom setting, the orderly operation of the College, and the pursuit of the College’s goals and core values. In addition to the Code, students also recognize and comply with the standards of classroom behavior as stated in each course syllabi. Further, students must understand that threats of violence are considered a serious infringement upon the learning environment and will be acted upon accordingly.
The Student Code of Conduct exists to guide the behavior of the students of the College of the Marshall Islands and to protect the individual rights of students and staff. The College recognizes its obligation to foster intellectual curiosity as well as social and cultural awareness. Further, CMI endeavors to provide for the safety and ‘well-being’ of students and staff, property protection, record security, and other education-related services.
Therefore, this Code of Student Conduct is based on the following principles:
- CMI is purposeful community. Intellectual life is central and faculty and students work together to strengthen teaching and learning.
- CMI is a just community, where dignity of all individuals is affirmed and equality of opportunity is maintained.
- CMI is an open, honest community where freedom of expression is protected and civility is expected
- CMI is a reflection of the greater RMI community, and, therefore, will honor its history, tradition and customs when possible.
- CMI is a disciplined community where individuals accept obligations to the group and defined governance procedures guide behavior for the common good.
- CMI is caring community where the ‘well-being’ of each student and staff member is sensitively supported and service to other is encouraged. The following kinds of conduct are subject to disciplinary action under the Student Conduct Code:
- Conduct which impacts the common good of the community
- Conduct which impacts safety of the community members
- Acts of Dishonesty
- Conduct which violates the dignity and/or safety an individual
