 Welcome to the Department of Liberal Arts

The Mission of the College of the Marshall Islands includes providing quality educational services to Marshallese and other people in the Marshall Islands who are seeking post-secondary education. The Liberal Arts department provides just such services, offering students courses in the disciplines that form the typical core of most baccalaureate degree programs. For this reason, the Liberal Arts Program’s Associate of Arts degree is CMI’s transfer-oriented degree.  Our program faculty and the student service programs we partner closely with, such as ASP, work to prepare our students in taking confident steps further into academia, into the world of skilled work, and into a fulfilling and carefully considered life.

  

With Liberal Arts’ purpose of providing the quality educational opportunities and course offerings to allow students to go on to transfer and excel at four-year institutions or move into critical career positions, our courses are tailored to our students’ needs and educational background to allow them to get everything they can from their courses and go on to bring that learning to their later experiences.  We launch students that are successful in business, government, science, hospitality, management, and further academic endeavors; they walk off the graduation stage with the L.A. degree in their hand as the hope and pride of this nation.

 

Mission

The mission of the Liberal Arts Program is to prepare students for transfer and other future educational opportunities, through civic awareness, critical thinking and problem solving, information analysis and communication, and artistic expression.

 

A.A. in Liberal Arts Program Outcomes

Upon graduation a student will

  1. Communicate complex ideas and information effectively through (a) writing, (b) oral presentations, and (c) technological resources.

  2. Demonstrate civic awareness and an understanding of multicultural perspectives.

  3. Process, analyze, and synthesize information from a variety of sources in order (a) to solve problems and (b) to formulate reasoned and substantiated individual points of view.

  4. Demonstrate and use quantitative literacy and scientific method to analyze information and solve problems.

  5. Demonstrate understanding and appreciation of the creative process.

  6. Be prepared for transfer to a four-year institution.

American Sign Language (ASL)

ASL 101 American Sign Language I (4 Credits)

Prerequisite: ENG 90s, Placement into Credit English, or Permission of Instructor

Introduces American Sign Language through finger spelling and Deaf culture by immersion in the visual language in order to communicate with other signers. Includes the manual alphabet for letters and numbers, use of one and two handed signs, classifiers for shape size and location through lessons for everyday vocabulary.

Introduces basic art techniques, terminology, art criticism, a variety of media and concepts of art through hands-on projects, art exploration, problem solving and evaluation. Practices the basic techniques of drawing, perspective, pen and ink, color theory, painting, watercolor, and value. Provides basic art information and techniques and encourages application of learning to develop individual artistic abilities.

Introduces a survey of art history from the Paleolithic era to the Renaissance. Examines, analyzes and evaluates the major stylistic periods, time periods, movements, and trends in the visual arts. This course will acquaint students with the critical processes in how to achieve a well-balanced appreciation for art and its influence on cultural development.

College Experience (CMI)

CMI 290 Liberal Arts Capstone (3 Credits)

Prerequisite: Student must have completed 30 credits toward their Liberal Arts degree, completed or concurrently enrolled in ENG 220 and have an approved proposal.

Acts as a culminating experience for Liberal Arts majors who are in the year of graduation. Applies student research to a service learning and a writing/presentation component.

Introduces techniques/approaches to creating original prose and verse. Investigates conventions, devices, and techniques – both traditional and contemporary – in the actual writing of poems, essays, and stories. Develops students' critical sense of writing and the process of revision. Allows students the opportunity to publish.

Designed to provide students with a foundation in children's literature and literacy processes. Examines the historical background and development of works written for young people.
