Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency Program

 

The Adult Education Program/High School Equivalency program is designed for students who are seeking an alternative means to complete secondary-level education and obtain RMI high school equivalency diploma or the U.S High School Equivalency diploma. This Program offers opportunities for RMI residents who did not complete high school to obtain their High School Equivalency, while improving their basic academic skills. The adult education program serves as a next step for students who want to continue their education either in college or enroll in a workforce development program. This program is for students who are years of age 17 and above and have been out of school. The post-secondary education or the Adult basic education coordination at CMI consists of the following:

 

  • Adult Education(ABE)

  • High School preparation for the RMI Equivalency and the U.S Equivalency test.

 

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) is divided into three levels for English as a second Language(ESL)

  • ESL Level 1: Basic literacy is for adults whose reading comprehension are below fourth grade levels who have little knowledge of the printed words and can read at a basic reading level. These adults are offered courses such as basic Science, basic Social Study, basic math and basic Reading and Writing. These course have generally been integrated to help these adult with their phonics and reading comprehension.

  • ESL Level 2: Beginning Literacy is for adult whose reading comprehension are below seventh grade. The courses offered for these are: beginning Science, beginning Social Study, beginning math and beginning Reading and Writing. All courses are integrated with reading to help students improve their reading skill.

  • ESL Level 3: Intermediate Literacy is for the adults whose reading level range around the eight to ninth grade reading level. These adults can comprehend more than 50% of any reading material. Courses offered for these adults are intermediate Science, intermediate Social Study, intermediate Math and Intermediate Reading and Writing. All courses are integrated with reading to increase the reading skills abilities for these adults.  

 

High School Preparation for RMI Equivalency or the HiSET

The RMI Equivalency or the HiSET is generally set as the major goal for the adult learners who attend this program. These adult learners will be able to seek an alternative need to complete secondary level to obtain the RMI high school equivalency diploma or the U.S High School Diploma. The RMI Equivalency or the U.S HiSET help ensure the ability to further their education on or off Islands or to enter into better jobs to develop skills for promotion. The RMI equivalency offer 5 courses

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Social Study

  • Science

  • Math

These courses range around the eleventh and twelve grade levels. These courses will prepare these to take the RMI Equivalency test or the U.S High School Equivalency Test.  

 

Program Mission:

The Adult Basic Education or the High School Equivalency program is to provide for the educational needs of adults in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and its community to give opportunity that requires basic skills to help individuals to work towards their productive future and also to prove opportunities to pursue better educational future.

 

Locations:

The Adult Basic Education program main center is located at the College of the Marshall Island, while another addendum site is located on Ebeye CMI Distance Education Center.
