 CMI Receives High Marks on U.S. National Survey

Majuro, MH – It appears that the Vision Statement announced by the College of the Marshall Islands last April is more than rhetoric. At Foundation Day ceremonies last spring CMI announced the goal “to become a model community college in the Pacific region.” Recently, three external reports give reason to suggest that CMI’s vision may not be such a distant reality.

 

Last week, the College of Marshall Islands received word from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) that it was being recognized for “outstanding performance.” The Community College Survey of Student Engagement provides a much-needed tool for assessing quality in community college education. CCSSE results help colleges focus on good educational practice — defined as practice that promotes high levels of student learning and retention — and identify areas in which community colleges can improve their programs and services for students. Two-time Harvard President Derek Bok in his book, Our Underachieving Colleges, calls CCSSE and its four-year college counterpart NSSE a “promising initiative to improve undergraduate education.”

 Asia Pacific Association for Fiduciary Studies conference

Two college students from the Marshall Islands won essay contests and will soon be getting on a flight to attend the Asia Pacific Association for Fiduciary Studies conference that will be held October 18 and 19 at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Manila.

Rendy Johnny is the winner from the College of the Marshall Islands in Majuro. Born on Ailinglaplap, he graduated from Seventh Day Adventist High School in Majuro. At the College of the Marshall Islands, he is majoring in business administration, is ranked second in his graduating class and is the Secretary of the Business Majors Club of CMI.

Maludrik Maludrik is the winner from the University of the South Pacific Center in Majuro. He is a 2006 graduate of RMI-USP Joint Education Program and is currently enrolled in USP’s Foundation Program and is planning to major in economics next year.

One student each from the University of Guam, Guam Community College, the Northern Marianas College, Palau Community College, the College of Micronesia – FSM, the College of the Marshall Islands and University of the South Pacific was eligible for the student competition.

The 2007 topics for the student competition were student experience in stock market investment, management of trust funds, and regional economic issues. Winners will receive paid accommodation and a per diem to attend the conference in Manila. Continental Airlines is sponsoring airline tickets for the students and their chaperones.
