Financial Information

The primary responsibility of financing a college education rests with students and their families.   However, if a student needs financial aid to pursue his or her education, the Financial Aid Office at CMI is available to help identify sources of financial assistance.  Students are encouraged to apply for a Pell Grant and other local government scholarships to cover tuition, fees and other educational costs.   Financial aid is awarded primarily on the basis of verifiable need.  Need is determined by calculating the cost of attendance (including personal expenses while at school) and the contribution by parents, spouse, and/or student towards his or her education.   More information is available through the CMI Financial Aid Office, and financial aid arrangements need to be made at least three months before registration.

The College reserves the right to withhold grades, transcripts, records, diplomas, and to deny registration until all College charges have been paid and the student’s account is cleared. Registration is not officially completed until all financial arrangements have been approved.

Payments

For registration to be official, all tuition and fees must be paid.  Students who are eligible for Pell grant and have received a valid Institutional Student Informational Record (ISIR) may charge their tuition and fees (except for registration fee) against their Pell grant up to the amount of their award. Any tuition, fee and other school charges in excess of their Pell grant should be paid in cash during registration.

Textbooks for use in courses by the college may be purchased from the CMI bookstore.  Students who have a valid ISIR and have an expected Pell grant award in excess of their tuition and fees may purchase their books and school supplies and charge them against their Pell grant.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are approved by the Board of Regents.  The College reserves the right to change the fee schedule and tuition rates for a given term without prior notice.  Tuition and fees listed here are for the 2004-2005 academic year.

College refunds will be made in full when changes by the College in published schedules precipitate a complete withdrawal by the student.  Partial refunds equal to the difference in fees will be made to students changing from one status to another when such a change is a result of changes in the published schedule of classes by the College. The College will assess penalty charges when CMI, not the student, is in error.

Requests for refunds should be made in writing to the Business Office within fifteen days after such fees become refundable.  The College assumes no liability for such refunds after fifteen days have passed without a written request for a refund.  An attempt will be made by the institution to make all refunds within two weeks of receipt of a written request for such a refund.

Return of Federal Funds

Beginning fall 2000, changes have been made for the return of federal Title IV funds.  The formula used to calculate the return of funds is available in the Financial Aid Office.  Students are responsible for 50% of what is owed and students must return the funds to CMI who, in turn, returns the funds to the U.S. Department of Education.  Students have 45 days to (1) repay the amount owed in full, or (2) make legitimate arrangements for payment with CMI or the U.S. Department of Education.  Should students fail to repay what is owed or fail to make arrangements for payment, they will be ineligible for financial aid indefinitely.

Students withdrawing from CMI and who wish to return the following semester and receive financial aid, must (1) repay or make arrangements for payment of Title IV funds owed and (2) provide documentation to the Financial aid Office of reasons for complete withdrawal, e.g., death certificate of immediate family member or hospital/medical documentation, etc.
