Uliga Campus

The main campus of the College of the Marshall Islands is located in Uliga, Majuro Atoll.  The College administrative offices, nursing dormitory, and library are located in the buildings formerly used as a hospital, as are some classrooms.  A two-story classroom building was completed in 1991, with a 4- classroom addition completed in 1996.  An administration annex, redeveloped in 1999, lies just beyond the men’s and women’s nursing dormitories, and includes the Physical Plant office and maintenance facilities, Personnel office, and small conference room.

Oscar deBrum Memorial Hall, renovated in 1999 and dedicated in memory of CMI’s first Chairman of the Board in 2002, houses the Adult and Continuing Education program and the Nuclear Institute on the first floor, and faculty offices on the second.  The College grounds were also improved during this period by the replacement of a large service-road area with grassy areas and pathways that center on the College flagpole.

In 2000, the completion of an additional two-story building added three large new classrooms, a science and mathematics computer lab, and science research room that includes an agricultural growth room.  The Education dormitory, a building funded through the Asian Development Bank, was also completed in 2000.  During 2001-2002, the road and parking area in front of the campus were paved through Republic of China funding.

More campus development is planned for the future: the replacement of temporary buildings that previously housed Upward Bound, Youth to Youth, and Architectural Engineering; a possible student center and expanded library facilities; perhaps further portico and grounds developments.

Arrak Campus - Marshall Islands Science Station

The Marshall Islands Science Station in Arrak, located at the western tip of Majuro Atoll, is a modern and multidisciplinary facility that fosters aquaculture research, agriculture research, science education and research, and demonstration/live exhibits.  In addition, offices for CMI Cooperative Research and Extension (CRE) are housed at this facility.  The Marshall Islands Science Station also offers opportunity for other government and private agencies to use the facilities for conferences and meetings.

Library

The College of the Marshall Islands library offers a wide variety of services.  Over 15,000 books have been selected for courses, general information, and reading enjoyment.  One hundred and forty magazines and newsletter subscriptions cover a wide range of topics, and back issues are available.  Newspapers from Palau, Guam, Northern Marianas, and the United States arrive daily.  SIRS Researcher on CD_ROM, providing both abstracts and/or full text, is updated quarterly.  Over 2000 videos and DVD's support curriculum.

Maps, microfilm, poster, and reference materials provide both general and specialized resources.  The computerized Reference Center provides access to library's catalog as well as CD's for general encyclopedias and a variety of topics: language, nursing, marine science, etc.  Children's and young adult books are located in the Reading Room, and there is an extensive paperback fiction collection for leisure reading.  Materials can be put on reserve for use in the Library.

The Micronesian Collection contains articles, books, proceedings, and reports on the area.  Materials on the Marshall Islands are collected in depth and works on local flora and fauna are well represented, as are historical and cultural materials.  These items are indexed in the Micronesian Collection Reference File (MCRF) by keyword, subject, geographical location, and author.  Area maps and videos are also available.

Tables and study carrels are located in the back of the library.  Photocopies can be made by the Library staff for a reasonable fee.  Rules and regulations for checkout and Library hours are posted.

Nuclear Institute

In 1997, College of the Marshall Islands established a Nuclear Institute to promote research and public understanding on the history of nuclear weapons and their effects on culture and diplomacy, including the post-World War II U.S. nuclear testing program in the Marshall Islands.  The Nuclear Institute is in partnership with the Nuclear Studies Institute of the American University, Washington, D.C.  Together they explore opprortunites to share ideas and exchange students and faculty, for the purpose of creating a peaceful future.  The Institute is located on Oscar deBrum Memorial Hall.  An approved class entitled Nuclear Tests in the Pacific is also offered at the College under the leadership of Director Mary Silk.
