Admission Informtion

Admission to the College of the Marshall Islands is based primarily upon evidence of the student’s ability to benefit from the educational programs of the College. The admissions policy is established by the Board of Regents and administered by the President of the College through the Admissions Board, including representatives from the faculty, administration, and student services staff. All records submitted by the applicants become the property of the College.

Admission Requirements

The deadlines and procedures for submission of the application for admission into a degree or certificate program are as follows:

Fall June 30
Spring November 30
Summer May 2

All admissions applications are submitted to the Office of Admissions and Records with the application fee. A complete CMI admissions application packet must include:

  • High school graduation or graduation at the end of the current school year or a GED Certificate.
  • Official transcript from high school showing a grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher as measured on a 4.00 scale, or an average score of forty-five (45) for all GED tests. CMI will not admit students whose high school cumulative GPA is less than 2.00. For students whose GPA falls below 2.00, the College will recommend that they pass the GED test prior to being admitted. College transfer students must submit official transcripts from previous colleges attended.
  • Completed application form.
  • Health examination form.
  • Application processing fee of $5.0

CMI administers tests in English and mathematics to all applicants to determine appropriate levels for placement in classes. Please see the Developmental Education section on page 31 for more information.

Conditional Admission

An extension of the admission application deadline may be necessary due to extenuating circumstances (i.e., problems with acquiring the health form, high school transcripts, delay in air/sea transportation, $5.00 admission fee). The list is not exhaustive. A two-week extension of the admission deadline, with the approval of the Dean of Students & Community Services, will be granted after a verbal or written request has been made by the student before the deadline.

Transfer Student Admission

A student who has earned satisfactory grades (D grades do not transfer) in another accredited college or university may apply for admission with advanced standing at the College of the Marshall Islands. Admission requirements are the same as given above. The CMI placement test will be waived for students whose previous credit-level courses are transferable. Failure to furnish previous college records when applying for admission will result in a student’s not receiving credit for previous satisfactory college work. Transfer credits are not calculated into CMI’s GPA. The final 12 credits in any CMI degree program must be earned at the College of the Marshall Islands.

International Student Admission

Students from countries other than the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of Palau (ROP), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, or the U.S. are classified as international students. International students should write to the Office of Admissions and Records at least six months before their expected date of enrollment to ensure acceptance and registration for courses. For admission, international students must submit to the Office of Admissions and Records the following documents:

  • Complete admission application including an application processing fee of $10.00.
  • Confirmation of financial resources for tuition, fees, and living expenses for a year, and confirmation of a round trip ticket to the Marshall Islands.
  • Proof of English proficiency with a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum score of 500 for applicants whose first language is not English.
  • The RMI student entry permit. The entry permit must be obtained before arrival from the Marshall Islands Immigration Office. To receive a student entry permit, applicants must send a copy of their letter of acceptance to CMI to: RMI Immigration Office, P.O. Box 890, Majuro, MH 96960, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and request an entry permit.
  • Medical and police clearance forms from his/her home country if the applicant has not resided in the RMI for five (5) or more years.
  • A copy of a valid birth certificate and passport, as well as a visa or entry permit into the RMI.

International students who graduate from high schools within the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and are not citizens of the RMI, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of Palau (ROP), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, or the U.S. must meet the International Student Admission Guidelines as specified above. Prospective students who have gained independent status and wish to attend CMI must return home and follow the international student admission procedures. If the student is a dependent, he/she must obtain the necessary immigration documents from the RMI Immigration Office.

Early Admission and Non-Matriculated Students

Students who do not wish to pursue a program leading to a degree or certificate may register for courses, if space permits and if prerequisites are satisfied. Non-matriculants are not eligible for financial aid, academic advising, and other services provided to matriculated, admitted students.

Students who do not have a high school diploma or GED may register for CMI courses as a non-matriculated student only after they have successfully completed an English and mathematics placement test, if space permits and if there is a letter of consent from their high school principal and from their parents or guardian.

Credits earned as a non-matriculated student may be applied to any degree or certificate only after the student applies and is officially admitted to CMI.

Readmittance/Reinstatement

Former CMI students who have not registered for classes for three or more years are classified as “inactive”, and must apply for re-admittance by completing the regular admissions process. Returning students who have been inactive for three (3) years graduate under the requirements listed in the catalog current at the time of re-entry. Students who are dismissed from CMI for disciplinary reasons or suspended for academic reasons may apply for reinstatement by completing the regular admissions process three (3) semesters after the date of academic dismissal or suspension. Students are re-admitted upon the recommendation of the Admissions Board, re-enter on academic probation, and follow the academic probation regulations.

A former CMI student who has successfully completed credit-level English and mathematics classes at CMI will not be required to take the CMI placement test prior to re-admission into appropriate credit-level courses. Those students re-admitted with only developmental-level courses on their transcripts will be required to take the placement tests.
